The International Debut: Auteur Burgundy

In a landmark collaboration, we are proud to introduce the 2023 Auteur Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru. A micro-allocation from the smallest and most elusive Grand Cru in Gevrey-Chambertin, this wine launches our chapter in Burgundy.

Faced with once-in-a-lifetime offerings from the most fiercely guarded parcels on the slope—a feat very few outsiders ever achieve in Burgundy—I was presented with a wine possessing the exact crystalline salinity and perfume that first triggered my passion 30 years ago. I simply couldn’t say no. For me, this is a profound, almost spiritual homecoming. As the son of a Hungarian refugee, my journey carries a lineage of survival and the drive to capture a kindred philosophy alongside the world’s most genuine producers. We have folded these rare allocations into our portfolio to launch The Auteur Burgundy Project—selections that proudly stand side-by-side with our Sonoma Coast wines. — Kenneth Juhasz, Winemaker / Founder

From Curation to Creation The Auteur Burgundy Project is a long-term commitment to the region’s most storied terroirs. Starting with the Fall 2025 harvest, we transition from curation to creationmoving into full production under our own hand in Meursault alongside my Burgundian brother, Pierre-Henri Rougeot. Grape to bottle under the helm of Kenneth Juhasz, Auteur founder and winemaker. Our permanent footprint in the Côte d’Or will draw from a portfolio of revered appellations, including: Gevrey-Chambertin, Meursault, Corton & Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, Chassagne-Montrachet.

The International Debut: Auteur Burgundy

Luminous aromatics of wild cherry, violet, and blood orange lead into a strikingly textured palate that balances lavish, blue-edge fruit with a satiny, supple grace. Resonant of its chalky Bajocian roots, the wine finishes with a piercing oyster-shell minerality and the high-definition tension that defines this cerebral Grand Cru.

Sourced from the 2.69-hectare parcel of Griotte-Chambertin—the smallest and arguably most cerebral Grand Cru in Gevrey. Its east-facing orientation and protected hollow allow for a longer, cooler ripening window compared to the broader sun exposure of neighboring Le Chambertin.

Harvested during the early morning hours of the September heat wave to capture rich fruit notes and perfumed florals. The wine remained elegant and balanced, aided by the natural vine hydration from early spring rains. Crafted in traditional methods, indigenous spontaneous fermenation and aged in French oak.

Griotte-Chambertin is a prestigious Grand Cru vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin, classified in 1937, and is one of the smallest in Burgundy at about 2.73 hectares, making its wines rare and highly sought after. Planted exclusively to Pinot Noir and located between Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, it shares elite terroir but produces wines known more for elegance and aromatic finesse than power. The name “Griotte” refers to sour cherries, a nod to the wine’s classic profile of red cherry, floral notes, silky tannins, and limestone-driven freshness, with the ability to age 20–40 years while often being approachable earlier than its more muscular neighbors.
