2005 Auteur Pinot Noir
Sonoma Stage Vineyard
Sonoma Coast, California
THE VINEYARD
Sonoma Stage is located in the southern portion
of the Sonoma Coast Appellation, at the apex of Stage Gulch Road
between Petaluma and Carneros. This is a cool and windy site,
keeping yields low and intense. The vineyard was planted by Richard
Hyde and his son Rick, brother and nephew of Larry Hyde.
THE WINEMAKING
Hand harvested on October 4, 2005, at 2 Tons
per Acre. The Sonoma Stage Pinot was co-fermented with 50% Calera
and 50% Swan selections, of which 25% was whole cluster. To maintain
the fresh fruit character of this dark beauty, native fermentation
and minimal cap manipulation preserved the finesse of this cool
climate Pinot. The wine was aged in 100%, One-Year-Old, French
Cooperage and pressed before dryness. Unfiltered and unfined.
THE PALATE
A lush, dark, weighty blend of wild blueberry,
marionberry and blackberry, with edges of violet, iron, earth
and peppercorn. Rich grilled flavors emerge on the palate with
a core of currant, blackberry and raspberry. Expansive and explosive,
yet not exhaustive.
